TAMI is a practitioner-driven framework that acts as a placeholder for cultural institutions. By generating dynamic, on-demand contexts, it questions and reshapes institutional structures to better serve the evolving needs of creative practices.
The Actual Main Institute (TAMI) is a conceptual framework that redefines the role of cultural institutions by putting practitioners at the center. Acting as an adaptable, on-demand structure, TAMI generates tailormade institutions and contexts to fit the unique needs of artistic and cultural projects. By flipping the traditional dynamic between practitioner and institution, TAMI challenges the boundaries of supply and demand in the cultural sector.
TAMI is not a permanent venue or singular entity; it is a dynamic container designed to adapt to a wide range of roles and functions—from public museums, art residencies and research institutes to private galleries. It uses techniques from theater, storytelling, and pataphysical design to explore what a cultural institution can and should be.
Conceived in 2023 by conceptual artist and contextual designer Maren Bang, TAMI was later expanded together with information designer and researcher Augustina Lavickaitė and cultural producer Guus Voorham.
