Het Tijdelijk Museum of Modern Art launches on September 5th at Huidenclub Rotterdam

Het Tijdelijk Museum of Modern Art was founded in 1974 by the Belgian/Dutch visionary Dolf Nijman - a suitcase manufacturer who through his business travels acquired an art collection which he later turned into a museum.

Het Tijdelijk is also a fictional museum. Fictional museums like this one offer a temporary escape from the complicated relationship between artist and institution, and a space to explore creative ideas freed from the constraints of the need to build a career. Het Tijdelijk Museum of Modern Art was intended to be the first iteration of many such institutions launched by The Actual Main Institute (TAMI).

For the exhibition ‘Echo - Morphed Mythologies’, TAMI dressed the gallery cube at Huidenclub in the costume of Het Tijdelijk Museum of Modern Art, allowing the space to take on the part of the museum for the duration of the exhibiton. When the exhibition ended, the museum was taken down, neatly folded and put away in a suitcase, ready to take on a new space.
